Conta com 36 microsc\u00f3pios petrogr\u00e1ficos binoculares Olympus BXP-40, adquiridos em 1995\/1996, equipados com objetivas Pol de 4X, 10X e 40X\/50X, cabe\u00e7otes binoculares com oculares 10X \/ campo 22, sendo uma com ret\u00edculo em cruz focaliz\u00e1vel com escala microm\u00e9trica no bra\u00e7o horizontal, conjunto de lentes de Bertrand para conoscopia e objetos auxiliares \u03bb (placa de gipso \/ quartzo), \u00bc \u03bb (placa de mica) e cunha de quartzo. Oito microsc\u00f3pios tem acess\u00f3rios para an\u00e1lise sob luz polarizada refletida, para a microscopia de min\u00e9rios, e um microsc\u00f3pio est\u00e1 equipado com tubo trinocular e c\u00e2mera para a aquisi\u00e7\u00e3o e proje\u00e7\u00e3o de imagens, com computador, programa e projetor de alta qualidade, que permitem a proje\u00e7\u00e3o \u201cao vivo\u201d das imagens geradas no microsc\u00f3pio para a audi\u00eancia na sala, seja em tela ou em monitor de TV, al\u00e9m da aquisi\u00e7\u00e3o de imagens e de filmes ilustrando as propriedades \u00f3pticas dos minerais e as texturas das rochas. O LDMP \u00e9 intensamente utilizado tamb\u00e9m nos per\u00edodos inter-aulas para estudos individuais, desenvolvimento de pesquisas de inicia\u00e7\u00e3o cient\u00edfica, est\u00e1gios e trabalhos de formatura (TCC), al\u00e9m de an\u00e1lises microsc\u00f3picas de p\u00f3s-graduandos e docentes do Instituto, haja visto a excelente qualidade e as boas condi\u00e7\u00f5es de conserva\u00e7\u00e3o de seus equipamentos. O n\u00famero de alunos regulares por disciplina varia entre 35 e 55, sendo que, nos casos em que o n\u00famero de alunos excede o n\u00famero de aparelhos dispon\u00edveis, comumente s\u00e3o oferecidos hor\u00e1rios alternativos para permitir o acesso individual aos microsc\u00f3pios durante as aulas pr\u00e1ticas.
