The Institute of Geosciences at USP (IGc-USP) has numerous laboratories specializing in different areas of Geology, where research is conducted to enrich the daily lives of students and produce science that contributes to the discoveries necessary for the advancement of geological knowledge. The Institute’s Analytical Infrastructure includes the Research Center (CEPAS), the Research Support Center (GeoHereditas), and the Multi-User Centers (MultiSed, CMGeo, GeoFluid, and CPGeo [LQI/LEM, LSP/LLA, LES e LTC]).
In addition, you can read about the Institute’s laboratories and read about the Research and Innovation Committee (CPqI/IGc-USP). The complete list of the Institution’s professors, as well as their research areas, can be found here.
The Institute has two undergraduate courses: Geology and a Bachelor’s degree in Geosciences and Environmental Education. To ensure the proper functioning of the courses that train the professionals of the future, extensive investment is needed in the physical space, which includes: classrooms, study room, computer room, rock collections, fossil collections, polarizing microscope room etc.
The Institute is open to receiving students from abroad for both undergraduate and graduate courses, as well as for laboratory internships – the internship depends on the approval of the supervising professor, with whom you will need to discuss the matter. If you are interested, please contact the responsible Office via email at ccintigc@usp.br for more information.
The “Museu de Geociências” has been central to the training and fascination of future geoscientists since 1935, when its collection began as part of the Natural Sciences course at the former FFLC-USP (Faculty of Philosophy, Sciences and Letters of the University of São Paulo). Since then, the museum’s collections have grown through donations of collections made by enthusiasts and researchers. In addition, there is the Litoteca, responsible selecting samples of rocks and minerals with scientific relevance, as well as preserving and managing documents. Today, the museum is renovated and open for visits from Tuesday to Saturday, with different opening hours. Please contact the museum for more details, including the possibility of guided tours for groups, and follow them on Instagram.
